The Makers Present “Trailblazing Your Way to Success: From Vision to Start-Up and Beyond” | April 14th
In President Obama’s Inaugural address, he said that “it has been the risk-takers, doers, the makers of things… who have carried us up the long rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.” These words hit home for a group of New York City young professionals who were inspired to create, The Makers, a collective of individuals with the goal of serving as a conduit for “risk-takers, doers, and makers of things” to connect, interact and build with one another for the greater good. By hosting a series of intimate events with a highly selected group of professionals, each event includes Featured Makers who are accomplished experts in their fields for a conversation on topics including philanthropy, financial independence, entrepreneurship and more to add value and help push dreams toward successful reality.
I just started reading Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer at Facebook. She’s on Fortune magazine’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business and is one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. She has gotten a lot of additional attention in the last few years because of a TEDtalk she gave in 2010. There, she talked about the things that women do in business to hold themselves back in their careers.
This book is a spin off of sorts where she explores why women’s progress in achieving leadership rolls has stalled. If that glass ceiling is shattered, why are there not more women at the helm of major corporations. How can there be more than 21 women on the Fortune 500 CEOs. And, more than 14% of the executive officer positions when we make up 50% of the population?
The new season of The Celebrity Apprentice debuted on Sunday night and features Apprentice All-Stars Lil’ Jon, Dennis Rodman, LaToya Jackson and Omarosa Manigault each of whom is looking to raise money for the charities of their choice:
As part of its Distinguished Leadership Series, the Council of Urban Professionals will present “A Conversation with Mellody Hobson”. March is Women’s History Month and Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments, has been an inspiration to women across the country for breaking through the glass ceiling in a male dominated industry. She joined the Ariel Investments as an intern and has risen through the ranks to become the leader of this investment firm. Below are details on the event that will be held on Monday, March 11th at 6pm. Go to grow, connect and build.

Today, February 5th, IHOP is celebrating National Pancake Day by inviting guests from around the country to enjoy a short stack of buttermilk pancakes – for FREE. YUM!!! I haven’t been to IHOP in a while, so this might be just the thing to get me in there again. I’m sure that was the point in the first place… It’s a great way to introduce or reintroduce people to the restaurants. And, a great way to show its commitment to social responsibility. So, while IHOP gets customers through its doors, they encouraging guests who receive free stacks to leave a donation for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals or other designated local charities. Since National Pancake Day started in 2006, IHOP has raised more than $10 million to support charities in communities where it operates. Read The Rest
Nene Leakes, everyone’s favorite housewife, is doing everything but sitting at home twiddling her thumbs… She’s on the Real Housewives of Atlanta, is on the new NBC show The New Normal and now just launched new shoe with Kim Kardashian’s company, ShoeDazzle.com. The shoe, “Nethia” (a shortened version of Nene’s full first name, Linnethia) is designed in true “Housewife” and “Kardashian” fashion. Sky high platform, with glitz, zips and lace! But, at a price that’s within most folks budgets – $39.99. 100% of the proceeds will go to the nonprofit Saving Our Daughters.
The shoe, sold through ShoeDazzle.com, will benefit charity Saving Our Daughters. “I’m honored to be partnered with ShoeDazzle on my Nethia design. When I knew that I would be designing a fall shoe, I knew that I wanted it to be a bootie and that the design of the shoe to have skin showing through to make it sexy for fall”.
It’s a part of ShoeDazzle’s “Celebrity Shoe Design Program for Charity.” Bill Strauss, Chief Executive Officer, ShoeDazzle said, “We are so thrilled that NeNe Leakes has selected the charity Saving Our Daughters whose mission is to empower teen women. NeNe’s design is a high heel, platform bootie that we know our clients will love. Nene created a style that looks high-fashion, yet is affordable”.

As millions of sports fans, athletes, celebrities and Beyonce fans converge on New Orleans, LA for Super Bowl XLVII, you’ve gotta take a moment to reflect and think about what a special moment this is for the city. A city that was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Where nearly 2,000 people died and there was billions of dollars worth of damage… People stranded on rooftops, images of the thousands of people who took refuge in the Louisiana Superdome after losing their homes. And, who can forget Kanye at a telethon voicing the frustration and appall many of us felt at the time. Read The Rest
Michael Kors just announced a long-term partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme, dedicated to helping solve the international hunger crisis.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has been providing much-needed food assistance to vulnerable people, particularly mothers and children, around the world for 50 years. The organization works in more than 70 countries and feeds 90 million people annually, making it the largest organization fighting hunger around the world. As an extension of the United Nations, it provides emergency and developmental assistance to eliminate hunger and food-insecurity in the world’s poorest countries.
