Madonna Joins GLAAD In Campaign to End Boy Scouts’ Gay Ban

This past weekend, Madonna took the stage at the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards to present the Vito Russo Award to advocate, award-winning journalist, author and talk show host Anderson Cooper. The Vito Russo Award is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality.

Madonna wore a Boy Scouts outfit as part of GLAAD’s year-long campaign to end the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay scouts and leaders.

In her presentation speech, she had a few choice words about the Boy Scouts’ ban on openly gay leaders and scouts.  At first, she playfully listed her qualifications for being a scout, but ended with a strong message about acceptance and bullying.

“I can rescue kittens from trees. . Most importantly, I know how to scout for boys,” she said, adding, “I think they should change their stupid rules.”

The Boy Scouts of America doesn’t allow openly gay people to serve in leadership positions or become scouts.  In a world where bullying has been a hot topic because of the many teens who commit suicide after succumbing to the abuse of their bullies, tolerance and acceptance has been the mission of many.  But, as we can see, there are still those who lean on closed-minded ways of thinking.

Ever an advocate of the LGBT community, Madge addressed the bullying of young gay, lesbian and transgender people.

When I think about young kids in America who are being bullied and tortured, who are taking their own lives because they feel alone and judged, outcast and misunderstood, I want to sit down and cry a river of tears,” Madonna said.

Ohio mom Jennifer Tyrrell, who was ousted as her son’s den leader because she is gay last year, also spoke onstage.

We’re making sure that no parent ever has to look their child in the eye, like the Boy Scouts made me do, and say that your family isn’t good enough,” said Tyrrell. “You really need to know about the loving way GLAAD staff has treated our family. Taking my countless phone calls at all hours of the night, crying with me and holding me through rivers of tears.”
