Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, founder of Yunus Social Business, Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Unite, and U.S. President Bill Clinton, founder of the Clinton Foundation, announced last Sunday the launch of a new social initiative called Haiti Forest. The partnership aims to solve social and environmental problems in Haiti by bringing sustainable, productive and socially responsible forests to the country.
Ten thousand hectares of land are being promised by the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment to develop the new, bold Haiti Forest Initiative in the Artibonite and northern part of the country. Haiti Forest has full support of the Government of Haiti and is in line with the priorities of the Government to support long-term reconstruction efforts, especially those that create jobs and promoting economic opportunities. The multi-year project will provide affordable food, timber, and employment in Haiti, and will be organized as a Social Business – a company set-up for maximizing social benefit rather than private profit. This is a pleasant surprise! A partnership between former President Bill Clinton and LA Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant?! I guess this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise since Kobe does a lot of philanthropic work in LA as a member of the city’s basketball team. And, President Clinton has been consistent in providing services for the people who need them most through the Bill Clinton Global Initiative. Bill and Kobe joined forces to help people with mental illness find “Hope, Help, and Home” through the Step Up on Second charity gala. The event was made possible by The Bill Clinton Global Initiative in partnership with the Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation and also served as the grand opening for Step Up on Vine.
Talk about having friends in high places! On Saturday, January 12th, the stars came out in full force to support the 2nd Annual Sean Penn and Friends Help Haiti Home event at the Montage Beverly Hills Hotel. The event, presented by Giorgio Armani and hosted by Anderson Cooper, brought out Hollywood royalty. Among them, the eternally handsome Richard Gere, Julia Roberts, Django’s Leonardo DiCaprio, Skyfall’s Daniel Craig and Reese Witherspoon – just to name a few. The A-List crowd raised $4 million to benefit J/P Haitian Relief Organization. The live auction included big ticket items like a day with Bill Clinton won by Leonardo DiCaprio and an Armani runway show scooped up by Reese Witherspoon –at six figures each.
