Called “the best civil rights law firm in American history” by President Obama, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s (NAACP’s) Legal Defense Fund (LDF) was founded in 1940 by renowned Justice Thurgood Marshall. A pillar in the history of the justice system, the LDF has worked tirelessly toward the goal of racial justice and equality.

Recipients of the Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement award this year are Alabama Attorney U.W. Clemon and lifetime activist and founder of the Children’s Defense Fund, Marion Wright Edelman. Also receiving the National Equal Justice Award are Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative and pharmaceutical giants Dr. P. Roy and Diana Vagelos. The fight for inclusivity and fair representation in government is currently one of the most polarizing in our country. While the civic, legal and educational elite are sure to be in attendance, we all should be bought-in to why this organization matters.
