New York University’s Organization of Black Women hosted its Eighth Annual “Women On The Move” panel on March 26, 2014 at the NYU Kimmel Center.
Women On The Move is designed to prepare young women for successful futures and careers within the political, music, fashion, film, and business industries. Their mission, along with the guidance of the Black Women Group and New York University, is to INFORM, EDUCATE, & EMPOWER young women.
Angela Simmons, Fashion Stylist to the stars Cleo Wade (most notable client Katy Perry), club owner and reality star Tahiry Jose, and a surprise guest spoke on a panel discussing personal branding, creating your own career and how to become your own boss.
Women on the Move (WOTM) goals are to provide students with critical insight on the different career opportunities that are available to them and to coach and mentor their students on exactly how they can achieve their goals. “Using your brand and being your own boss can avoid some of the pervasive culture of inequality in corporate America as it pertains to gender and more specifically, women”, says Amber J Ravenel (Board member of WOTM).
WOTM aims to instill female youth with hope for a successful future. It’s their belief that by collaborating with strong female industry leaders in our community that each of those guest speakers will leave the WOTM platform with a profound sense of accomplishment and fulfillment; they would leave knowing that they gave back to their sisterhood. In the past, WOTM has had incredible speakers such as journalist and Political industry tycoon, Danyel Smith, author, NBC Talk Stoop’s Cat Greenleaf, and District 21 Council Member Julissa Ferreras (the first elected Latina council in the borough of Queens).
