On March 22, 2014, UN World Water Day, FACE Africa hosted its 5thAnnual WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Gala in New York City at Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers. The Gala attracted over 300 guests and raised close to $150,000, with Chevron Liberia to provide a matching $100,000 grant, all of which will fund 30 clean water projects in Rivercess County, Liberia and provide 12,000 people with clean water.
The Honorary Committee for this year’s WASH Gala included Mr. Alex Cummings, EVP and Chief Administrative Officer of The Coca-Cola Company, Dikembe Mutombo, Founder and Chairman of The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation and Ambassador for NBA Cares Foundation, Ms. Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate and Founder and President of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa and Mr. Kevin McGovern, Chairman and CEO of McGovern Capital and Chairman of The Water Initiative. Included in the $150,000 raised from the Gala was a $5,000 pledge from Leymah Gbowee and Alex Cummings each.
This year’s event honored Nigerian entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist – Tony Elumelu and the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF). While Mr. Elumelu himself could not attend in person, the award was accepted by Ernest Dio, Acting General Manager at the United Bank of Africa (UBA) who also pledged $5,000 to fund a well.
